IN SOCIETY

Our mission is utilizing and protecting the local resources.
We will continue to work to protect abundant nature in the future generations.

  • Protecting the Hamagou and the Island's Nature While Preserving the Ecosystem

Although Miyajima is protected by many laws, we only use hamagou for SAKURAO GIN HAMAGOU that has been carefully sourced under the guidance of experts, with full consideration for the impact on Miyajima's natural environment. In collaboration with Prof. Tsubota of Hiroshima University and UNESCO School Miyajima Gakuen (Miyajima Elementary and Junior High Schools), we participate in beach observation and cleanup activities of the hamagou habitat as part of their educational programs.

We collect artificial items such as plastic while leaving natural driftwood and other materials on the beach as much as possible. This is the cleanup method that helps preserve the hamagou and the island's rich natural environment for future generations.

  • Restoring Lost Vegetation

We participate in vegetation restoration activities around the Miyajima Ropeway Shishiiwa Station, led by UNESCO School Miyajima Gakuen, Hiroshima Forest Administration, Hiroshima University, and Miyajima Ropeway, working together to restore the area to its original natural state from perspectives of environmental conservation, landscape protection, and disaster prevention.

  • Nurturing the Juniper Berry Forest

It may not be widely known, but juniper berries actually grow in certain areas of Hiroshima. SAKURAO GIN LIMITED uses Hiroshima-grown juniper berries, which are characterized by a slightly sweet aroma.

Proper forest management — including thinning and undergrowth clearing — allows sunlight to penetrate the forest and creates conditions for healthy tree growth. Well-maintained forests develop strong root systems that improve drainage and reduce the risk of landslides and sediment disasters.

With the cooperation of local forestry associations, we work to protect and nurture these precious juniper forests, connecting them to future generations.

  • Growing Hiroshima Barley

Sera is located in the central part of Hiroshima Prefecture. In the rich land of the Chugoku Mountains, various agricultural products including rice, fruits, and flowers are cultivated.

We have been working with the people of Sera, who are active in agricultural production, to grow barley malt for whisky. After various trial cultivations to find the best variety suited to Sera, we were able to begin producing whisky using Sera-grown barley malt in 2023.

In March 2024, we concluded the "Agreement on Barley and Sera Regional Development" to deepen mutual cooperation in producing whisky using locally grown ingredients. We will continue our challenge to deliver better products to everyone.
